The importance of this training is to ensure that farmers in Hurungwe benefit by improving their livelihoods and community development. This is also a way of promoting climate mitigation and adaptation within their community.

Opening the event, a representative for the Ward 25 councilor, Edmore Nyamukumba gave introductions and welcome remarks. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to all the farmers who accepted the invite to come and learn more about conservative farming.

Didmus Dewa, Program Manager for 4-H Zimbabwe gave a brief about the work that has been done by 4-H Zimbabwe in Food security and Climate Change programming. He highlighted that 4-H Zimbabwe has established community gardens and 8 solar powered boreholes in the district which have also benefitted more than 800 households.

“As 4-H Zimbabwe, our aim is to ensure that climate change does not impact the livelihoods of individuals. We have also established community gardens and solar powered boreholes in the Midlands Province, Chiwundura district. By doing this we want to ensure that no one is affected Climate Change and that our Nation is food secure,” he said.

Honorable Member of Parliament for Hurungwe West Constituency, Chinjai Kambuzuma commended the work being done by 4-H Zimbabwe in enhancing the lives of the community members in Hurungwe and ensuring that farmers are climate smart and resilient.

After articulating the concept and the practical demonstrations led by 4-H Zimbabwe and AGRITEX officers, the champion farmers received certificates from the organisation.

Giving closing remarks, Chief Matau emphasized on the need for sustainable agricultural practices as they will ensure sustainable food security for everyone. He also appreciated 4-H Zimbabwe for specifically selecting Hurungwe West District to be one of the beneficiaries for such an impactful initiative.

“We thank 4-H for always considering the wellbeing of the Hurungwe community. I believe that if we continue to work together in creating a climate resilient community then we will witness high crop yields and no one will starve.

4-H Zimbabwe is going back to Hurungwe West to establish more boreholes and drip kits for the community gardens.
